Who Can Join KiwiSaver?
There are a few criteria you need to meet in order to join:
Residency Status
New Zealand Citizens living in New Zealand: You’re eligible to join KiwiSaver anytime.
New Zealand Citizens living abroad: You cannot join KiwiSaver if you're a New Zealand citizen who does not currently live permanently in New Zealand.
Permanent Residents: You’re eligible to join If you’re a permanent resident of New Zealand.
Work Visa Holders: You cannot join KiwiSaver if you hold a temporary, visitor, work or student visa
Age Requirements
18 Years and Older: If you’re 18 or older and meet the residency criteria, you’re all set! If you start a new job, your employer will usually enrol you in KiwiSaver automatically, unless you choose to opt out. If you’re self-employed or not currently employed, you can join KiwiSaver voluntarily.
Under 18 Years: If you’re under 18, you can join KiwiSaver directly through a scheme provider, but not through your employer. If you’re 16 or 17, at least one legal guardian must co-sign your application. If you don’t have a legal guardian, get in touch with your chosen KiwiSaver scheme provider. If you’re under 16, you’ll need the consent of all your legal guardians and cannot enrol yourself.
65 Years and Older: It’s never too late to join KiwiSaver! Even though you can access your funds at 65, you can still join the scheme. However, you won’t receive government contributions, and your employer isn’t required to contribute - though many still do.
So, why wait? If you meet these criteria, consider enrolling in KiwiSaver today to give your future self a financial boost for your retirement. If you would like some help to get this sorted, get in touch and we can assist, free of charge.
